Problem Statement

Creating an User-Friendly Dashboard

Nomie is a platform for community college students in Quebec. After the Covid pandemic, students have found it challenging to communicate with each other. The Nomie platform includes ice breaker games to help students connect and learn about each other.

Our design team has revamped the dashboard and user flow for teachers. These updates will assist them in navigating the platform, understanding the games, modifying classrooms, sharing classrooms with students, and offering game instructions. Additionally, we've reevaluated the onboarding questions to better address student connectivity.

Nomie's Goals

Business Goals

Improve efficiency by providing data and instructions for the teachers.

User Goals

Teachers are able to understand the games, and easily add students.

User Testing

Usability Testing for College Teacher

The user flow of creating classroom & inviting students to the platform was a difficult process for both the client, and the teacher. The client had to send documents to help the teachers understand how the games and the platform works.

We conducted user testing on various features of the platform. We discovered that most teachers struggle with class navigation, editing classrooms, and following game instructions.

Design Exploration

In the initial trials, we develop various iterations to understand the client's perspective and explore new ideas that enhance usability for students.

At the end of our first exploration phase, we decided to separate the students tab from the main dashboard to reduce the clutter on the main page. We also discovered challenges from the client's perspective. She had to send individual documents to explain the process of inviting students to Nomie and provide game instructions. Consequently, we developed another solution.

Design System

Here we used the existing design system but added some addition UI visuals and illustrations. After finalizing the usability edits, I crafted the final screens in Figma. My aim was to retain a visual identity that aligns with the original brand values. The dominant use of orange in the color palette represents creativity, friendliness, and youthfulness - three brand values that resonate with our target users.

  • The new visual style encapsulates the friendly, youthful energy of our users.

  • The redesigned dashboard prioritizes game displays and enhances usability for teachers.

Learnings

Prioritize Client's Needs

As designers, we need to balance sharing our new ideas and satisfying our clients. What we think doesn't always align with the user's or client's needs. The more I understand the client's struggles, the more efficient solutions I can find. Ultimately, the main goal of a designer should be to make the user happy.
